The Joe Louis Puppets and their manipulators

The Joe Louis puppet or ‘Thai Traditional Small Puppet Show’ is a priceless art form which is very extraordinary and impressively wonderful. The Thai Traditional Puppetry was created by Sakorn Yangkhiawsod, a talented puppet master who started making the first puppet in his life when he was 20 years old and awarded an honour prize of National Artist in 1996.

The puppet play is such a unique performance which can be found nowhere else but Thailand. The Joe Louis puppets are more than the moving toys but they are alive! The puppets are controlled by three manipulators who surprisingly make lifelike human movements. One of the manipulators controls one trunk and arm, the second person takes care of the other arm and the last one who usually stays in the middle deals with both legs. All the manipulators must be well trained in Khon dance and the harmony is really required among them.

The most common play performed by this Thai traditional small puppet show is a well-known epic called Ramayana. The audiences are guaranteed a breathtaking show while watching the Joe Louis puppets moving. They can do a lot of human gestures and also express their feelings which incredibly convince the audiences that they are truly alive. The puppets are human look alike, the onely difference is that they can’t breathe.

The Joe Louis has been performed in many countries around the world and earned several honour awards. Suan-Lum Night Bazaar is home to the Joe Louis Theater where you can experience the fantastic daily performance of those puppets. The details of the show

I went to the Joe Louis show with my American friend four years ago and we got a big ticket discount as we carried our student ID cards. At the end of the show, the three manipulators who were controlling ‘Hanuman’, the mischievous monkey king puppet, took the puppet off the stage and walked towards the audiences and then to us! I was sitting right next to my friend who got aisle seat and Hunuman paused and looked at us, he suddenly grabbed my bag and ran back to the stage! My friend and I were left gasping with a hundreds of eyes were looking at us. I was sure that it was because of him who caught Hanuman’s attention, that was why Hanuman picked on me as he wanted to entertain my foreign friend.

However, as my friend didn’t seem to be able to help at all, I had to go to Hanuman myself to ask for my bag back, which meant in front of the stage and also before ALL other audiences!! I was extremely shy there and Hanuman still kept making fun of me. Then, Hanuman, who was being controlled, pointed at his cheek and one of the manipulators whispered me to kiss Hanuman!!!! Oh come on, with everyone was watching, I had no choices, did I? I kissed him on the cheek and he handed me my bag. Walking back to my seat was even worse as I had to face those people, most of whom were giggling!

I’ve just got back from Maroon 5 concert! I was humming all the way back home, the concert was quite great. I went there with one of my friends and we got the tickets at 6:30 pm, it was just 2 hours before the performance started!

An auditorium was quite packed even though it was not as packed as I had expected. In order to heat us up, Maroon 5 begun with ‘Harder to breathe’, followed by loads of their hits like ‘Wake up call’, ‘Makes me wonder’, ‘This love’ (which really made the people stand up on their feet), ‘Won’t go home without you’ (which was the most sung along) and superbly ended their concert with a sweet love song ‘She will be loved’ (which truly melted girls’ hearts).

Not so many people were singing along as their tunes are quite unique and the beats are really fast, thus I could see most of them being stuck on their seats and now and then screamed once Adam, the lead singer and guitarist of the band, was trying to act cool which definitely worked!!!

Despite the fact that the sound was not so good, Maroon 5 sang in different rhythms from their original beats and the performance should have been longer than an hour and a half, they got 9 out of 10 from me!

They have already been loved!

I do recommend you guys who long for a great fun period of time in life on the beginning of the upcoming summer to watch a lovely film named ‘27 dresses’, starring James Marsden and Katherine Heigl.

The movie tells us about a lady, Jane, who has been to 27 weddings as a bridesmaid with different weird dresses (some of which I found very beautiful). She falls for her own boss, George, who only has her as his most favorite staff, but unfortunately he never considers her as his soul mate. And worse, he falls for her baby sister, Tess, at his first glance.

Jane runs into her favorite writer, Kevin Doyle, however, she never knows that since he uses ‘Malcolm Doyle’ as his byline. Kevin finds her life so interesting that he asks his editor to write about her and guarantees it’d be his most fantastic story ever. Jane, who is suffering from the upcoming wedding of her beloved sister and boss, is dealing with everything to make the wedding to perfection.

However, Tess lies to George as she wants to impress him including telling him she’s a vegetarian and a pet lover while she’s not all these things at all. Jane can’t stand such a thing, it’s not because she’s jealous of Tess but she loves George and doesn’t want him to be deceived. Tess also cuts some parts of her mother’s wedding in order to make it more fashionable. That’s enough for Jane to reveal everything or to say, to destroy her sister’s life….unintentionally!

Kevin bit by bit falls for Jane and he’s done the worst thing in his life by writing an article about her being a 27-wedding bridesmaid and posting loads of her photos in different dresses on Sunday’s newspaper. Although he asks his editor not to publish the story, it’s too late!

The movie reaches its climax without any laughter from the audiences, this means ‘27 dresses’ stuns them with something that you don’t want to miss!

3. “Every decade has an iconic blond like Marilyn Monroe or Princess Diana, and right now, I’m that icon.” - Paris Hilton

* Yes I agree as long as the term ‘blonde’ doesn’t mean a hair color

4. “I don’t really think. I just walk” - Paris Hilton

* Right, we never doubt that for a minute.

5. “If your parents never had children, chances are you won’t either” - Dick Cavett

I have never been interested in any Hollywood female stars, well I mean I never feel so special to any of them before. However, I was writing an article about a British female actress on the previous day and I almost fell for her, but I was still aware I was a girl.

Charming 23-year-old Keira Knightley really impressed me with her role Domino Harvey in ‘Domino’ and Elizabeth Swann in ‘Pirates Of the Caribbean’, that was not because of her appearance but her great talent in acting. Once I wrote about her and searched for loads of her photos for the article, I all of a sudden felt she was really attractive with her smile. Some say she is into appearing nude in the media, of course she gets a lot of money, I still feel she’s naive. She was truly born to be an actor, her parents must have been her inspiration as her mommy is a playwright and her daddy is an actor.

I find myself a bit weird when looking at her photos, she’s sooooo stunning, although she’s not as beautiful as some Hollywood celebrities. She rocks!

I collected 10 stupid celebrity quotes which are extremely funny and silly. Some celebs are real dumbos you have no idea.

1. “I’ve never really wanted to go to Japan, simply because I don’t really like eating fish, and I know that’s very popular out there in Africa” - Britney Spears

Did she ever take Geography class in school?

2. “I have hired a teacher to teach me the French language because I know they all speak French in Europe and I don’t want to talk any nonsense when I’m here” - Paris Hilton

Does she sound naive or retarded to you?

3. “What’s Walmart, do they sell like wall stuff?”

Who else? Ms. Paris Hilton!!!

4. “The word ‘genius’ isn’t applicable in football. A genius is a guy like Norman Einstein.” - Joe Theisman - Football commentator and former American football quarterback

Nice name Norman Einstein! Who’s Albert Einstein then?

5. “Sorry, I don’t know much about you. I don’t follow tennis.” - Christina Aguilera to Tiger Woods, after he told her he loved her music.

Tiger Wood participates both in tennis Wimbledon and Nasdaq 100 Open

6. “Chemistry is a class you take in high school or college, where you figure out two plus two is ten, or something” - Dennis Rodman (ex NBA player).

Has he started playing basketball since he was born without attending school at all??

7. “China is a big country, inhabited by many Chinese.” - Charles De Gaulle (former French president)

Sounds better than Japan in Africa though

8. “I’m honored to shake the hand of a brave Iraqi citizen who had his hand cut off by Saddam Hussein.” - George W. Bush

Ladies and gentlemen in the US, your President!!

9. “I hate dead people.” - Paris Hilton
Come on girl, grow up!

10 “He treats us like men. He lets us wear earrings.” - Torrin Polk, University of Houston receiver, on his coach, John Jenkins

Try a mini skirt next time

Despite being a communication arts student, I have never been a TV addict at all. I barely watch TV so I don’t know what’s new on it. However, a cable TV is pretty popular among Thai people, meaning they have a huge range of TV programmes to keep them stuck in front of TV.

I have just been recommended a Korean game show named X-man which has been broadcasted in one of the cables in Thailand for quite some time. I was convinced to check it out by one of my friends who was trying his hardest to explain what the show was like. He failed! I didn’t get what the show was about until I got to see it through youtube.com.

X-man is divided in a few parts, if I’m not mistaken. One of them that my friend induced me to watch was called the ‘Dangyunhaji’ game or ‘Of course’ game. Umm..it’s not so easy if you were invited to join the game. However, the guests are usually Korean celebrities (but I don’t really know how famous they are). They will be separated into two groups and each team will send one of their members to take on each other, once a team wins, the other team has to send another member to continue the fight which requires no weapon but flairs.

The ‘Dangyunhaji’ game is an absolutely funny game show on earth and I was laughing to death while watching it, of course with English sub-titles. Both of them are trying to say anything they can come up with and the other has to say Dangyunhaj which means of course in order to continue the play. Once one of them is dumbly attacked by some sentences spoken by the other and he/she can’t respond with the term ‘Dangyunhaj’, it might because the sentences are not true or whatever, he/she loses!

Well, I don’t think all of you get the idea of how the game is played haha, never mind, check out these video’s below and you will acknowledge the game is extremely hilarious. You can even search with the keyword ‘Dangyunhaj’ in the youtube website if you find the game very addictive. Check them out, I guarantee you will burst out of laugh!

I’m one of those who have to enjoy New Year holiday at home. There’s nothing better than takin a nap, eating, listening to music and watching TV! Sounds like I’m a couch potato, err sort of!

I was too free on this lovely Saturday, still has nothing useful to deal with, thus I took my time on a Japanese movie, no actually it’s an animation called “Spirited Away”.

It was released in 2001 but I just got to know it six years after that or just a month ago. My friend from university is a movie maniac and he has been convincing me that this film is splendid. I finally borrowed its CD from another of my friend.

The story was about a girl named Chihiro and her parents who got lost in a strange city while they were on the way moving to their new house. Chihiro’s parents were transformed into pigs and the girl was struggling all the way to turn them into normal along with the help from a boy called Haku. She had to work in a bathhouse owned by a witch Yubaba who almost got Chihiro’s spirit by making her forget who she was. The girl ventured through many adventures and finally got her parents back.

Excuse me, do not consider it as only the animation! This one is special, it’s unique with its plot, characters, creativity and some good points that were expressed out by a famous director Hayao Miyazaki. You will be surprised to know how many gorgeous awards the animation has got including prestigious Oscar - Best Animated Feature, check it out for more awards http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0245429/awards

Hollywood is not always the best, If you are not too busy, try “Spirited away”. I was even spirited by the movie.

Today I am willing to spoil those who have picked Bangkok as the destination for their holiday on New Year and also to persuade those rain check holders. Anyway, yesterday I mentioned that Bangkok was boring, for me yes but for all tourists, of course not. As soon as you get to know Bangkok, you absolutely find it one of the most fascinating cites in the word and then you would think I am insane saying Bangkok is dull.

Patpong

If you want to experience something new, fun and weird, learn how to pronounce the place’s name precisely. Patpong is full of pubs and go-go bars with lots of dancing queens who are both real women and queers but you can’t tell which one are ladies or ladyboys. Patpong is very well-known for this kind of thing and all of my foreign friends always ask where the place is, yet I’m never proud of it. How could I be?

Suanlum night bazaar & Lumpini Boxing Stadium

The fantastic shopping place where you can find wide range of goods from antiques, souvenirs, trendy clothing to Thai boxing shorts. You might need a skill in bargaining if you can’t speak Thai as the stuff are pretty costly. Besides, next to the bazaar, there’s a boxing ring called Lumpini Stadium. For ticket reservation, call: (662) 252-8765, 251-4303, 253-7702, 253-7940.

MBK Department store

You can’t find any department store that is very crowded with foreigners than MBK. The mall is open at 10 in the morning and close at 9pm. Do not be surprised if you end up your shopping day with overabundant shopping bags in your hands as the goods are quite cheap with good quality.

Chatuchak Market (JJ Market)

Spare at least one day for shopping at Chatuchak Market since you can’t even walk all over it in a day. The market is open on weekend and that makes the place look like canned sardine. Whether you are just slacking your time at the market or want to break your previous record of shopping, you will finally buy something.

Khaosan Road

You will never reach Bangkok if you don’t make a trip to Khaosan Road! The place is kind of a small alley where numerous stores and stalls lined in. You can even plan for clubbing or just sitting and chilling with some beer and football games on TV not to mention many small salons where specialize in dreadlock!

Ok Happy New Year people!
